Cairns to Port Douglas Road .. great views

Heading north to Mossman/Port Douglas the road meanders along some of the most beautiful, rugged coastline with its beautiful beaches, some completely deserted. You'll be able to get away from it all completely on your own to take in the beauty of our beautiful country.

An introduction to Port Douglas and its laid back atmosphere is evident entering the town by the 5 kms. of beautiful oil palms.

A wander around the main street with its "old town atmosphere" with lots of trees, will leave you relaxed. A big plus for the Port is the fact that all accommodation which ranges from backpackers to 5 star luxury, is within easy walking distance to the beach.

A must see at "The Port" is Four Mile Beach. The beach of beautiful white, hard sand seems to go on forever. Pack a picnic lunch and head out along the beach in the early morning.

From the other side of town you can reach the lookout at the top of this headland. This gives a great view of Four Mile Beach in one direction and towards Cape Kimberley /Daintree in the other direction and out to sea for miles and miles.

The fishing is great from Port Douglas, and its closest to Linben Banks for game fishing... The diving's great as well and tours take in the Outer Reef and Low Isles. Busses leave Cairns to connect daily. Low Isles are among the few remaining undeveloped islands on the Great barrier reef which are readily accessible to tourists. Most islands without resorts can only be visited by private or charter boats. Lowe Isles are a magnificent exception. They consist of a true coral cay inhabited only by a lighthouse keeper, his assistant, and an uninhabited mangrove island which is a rich breeding ground for marine life.

The cay is an idyllic picture postcard island floating in a turquoise lagoon. Its wide clean beach is strewn with coral and shells, and criss crossed with strands of purple flowering vine.

Port Douglas is 67 kms north of Cairns International Airport and visitors can transfer from the airport directly to their accommodation in Port Douglas via the local coach service.
Use Port Douglas as your "home base" to visit the reef; to dive, snorkel, and game fish; explore the Mossman Gorge and the Daintree Rainforest areas, as well as cruise along the Daintree River, visit the Atherton Tablelands and Kuranda by train, experience the history and charm of Cooktown, sample the fresh tropical fruits and plentiful seafoods, and the fare at any one of the many excellent restaurants, or just relax on the beautiful beaches and enjoy the village atmosphere.

Perfect one day ... beautiful the next, Port Douglas is more than just a five star resort location. There are lots of great places to stay to suit your pocket, and plenty more to see.

At the end of Four Mile Beach is a headland which for the more energetic has a excellent view. Climb around the rocks and you'll feel like you are the only one in the world.
