Mt Surprise is the first town within the Gulf Savannah encountered by visitors approaching from the east.
It is an ideal area to fossick for gemstones, but for the not so energetic, there's a great display at the service station. Local lady Pat Wallace is the one to see for help in recognising stones in the natural, and advice regarding fossicking permits.
Mt Surprise, Gulf Savannah Make Mt Surprise your base to explore the Undara Lava Fields, 40 mile scrub National Park, swimming at Junction Creek just a few miles west, or the Einasleigh River especially in the early part of the year after the storms.
Another great spot is at Routh Creek on top of the Newcastle Range.
The Undara lava fields is the west of Mt. Surprise is the toe of the lava flow which originated from the 164 craters of the McBride Plateau.
There are basalt tunnels which run for some 100 miles underground and can only be accessed through the Savannah Guide Post located at the Undara Lava Lodge on the Undara Volcanic National Park.
