Located just 135km south west of Townsville, Charters Towers is renowned for its heritage and gold mining history.

Where Outback life meets the tropics, Charters Towers is the perfect example of the real Australia - brilliantly coloured sunsets, cattle stations, a friendly atmosphere and heritage streetscape all adding to its unique appeal.

Charters Towers' wonderful heritage architecture is complemented by many modern facilities including a magnificent theatre hosting live performances, two cinemas, great restaurants and a range of tours.

At the height of the gold rush during the late 1880's, Charters Towers was once the second largest city in Queensland. Today, visitors can step back in time by walking the city's One Square Mile - a historic mining precinct of magnificent civic buildings of the era including the Stock Exchange Arcade, World Theatre and Charters Towers Post Office. Also highly recommended is a visit to the magnificent Civic Club, once the domain of men only, for a relaxing drink, meal or to play a game on the original billiard tables still in use.

Mining continues to be an important part of Charters Towers' life but the rich seams have long been worked out and the remaining gold can only be reached by modern mechanised methods.

Charters Towers is a city surrounded by the huge Dalrymple Shire. This is cattle country; however, there is renewed interest in mining and tourism.

Visitors can stay on working cattle properties enjoying the experience and friendships of Outback hospitality. In town, there is a variety of accommodation from hotels, motels to caravan parks and charming B&Bs.

The Visitor Information Centre brings to life the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail, with interactive displays including an audiovisual presentation of how the world came to Charters Towers after the discovery of gold.

The well-equipped and modern Visitor Information Centre staffed by friendly volunteers is located in the heart of the historic precinct. Visitors are invited to make contact for further information on a range of available tours, accommodation and other attractions.
